  • I hope preventative care is not a waste of money... I have braces

  • Before SS dx I had to have two teeth pulled and have a partial plate for two side teeth :( It was horrible trying to get used to that foreign object in my mouth.

  • I had braces when I was fifteen. I am now 62 and have most of my teeth. My dentist always says I am lucky to have kept my teeth. I do have fillings in all my teeth and have had to have a couple removed. I also had a bridge taken out because plaque built up on it no matter how much I brushed, or flossed, but my top too bridges are ok - I needed the bridges for the gaps when my braces came off. I have had SS for 30+ years - so yes it is worth looking after your teeth. Watch what you eat, brush and floss and regular visits to the dentist and hygienist.

  • Actually I am 61 - not 62 until December - I might have to be 61 for another year because I keep giving the wrong age LOL.

  • The important thing to remember is that every persons journey in SS is different and just because one person may have lost all their teeth does not mean you will.

  • I just ordered a WaterPik system! I know I have two root canals that need to be done. One is in front, the other is on the side, next to the tooth that is currently on a partial. I may have the front root canal done and put the other on the partial. Dentist isn't sure it can be saved regardless of root canal. I hate to spend hundreds of dollars and the end result be pulling it.

  • I guess you have to be guided by your dentist. I am lucky in that my two missing teeth are at the side and don't really show. What is a WaterPik system?

  • The two I had to have pulled and are on a partial are on the sides also. A Waterpik system is an electric toothbrush, but also has the water flossing with it. Recommended by most dentist to be the best cleaning system for your teeth and gums at home for cleaning and plaque removal.

  • Ah we have something like that in the UK - my dentist said they were good.

  • I am a second generation sjogrens sufferer. My mother also had sjogrens and lost all her teeth. My teeth are on the rapid decline. I have many fillings and root canals Now they are breaking. I lost 3 just 2 weeks ago (had to be puled by a specialist and am still in lots of pain from it, they are not healing well at all) That same week my front tooth broke but luckily it could be repaired. My dentist says to keep up with preventative measures as much as you can. Your teeth affect many other areas of your body. Luckily i have good insurance. I am determined to keep trying to keep my teeth.

  • I am 62 and always had good teeth. Now, they have started breaking.

  • I really fear I am fighting a losing battle, given the history of my teeth. I never remember a dental visit without problems. I don't have dental insurance since no longer employed.

  • I have dentures due to a bad bad marriage, my gums are the ones hurting

  • How long have you had Sjogren's?

  • 20 years.

  • I am 61 and I have had crowns on about six of my teeth and in the last couple of years I have had 5 break. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago... but I'm sure I've had both sjogrens and Lupus for many many years.

  • I was diagnosed with Lupus first and just diagnosed with RA.. Also, just found out I have cancer of my femur that goes down into my knee. The Ortho kept blowing it off as just arthritis. I tried to tell him it was different. My Rheumy is the one that sent me for the tests to diagnose.

  • Oh goodness Shelia, I am so sorry to hear that. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • i've had several removed, got partials that dont fit, they were so bad the dentist filed down a tooth and broke it
